Valentine’s Day

Here comes the SUGAR RUSH! Valentine’s Day is such a fun holiday, but it is a bit challenging to incorporate it into a lot of subject areas, but here are activities that I have found and loved for Valentine’s Day!

valentines day activities and plan for a fun and easy party

Math

I use this worksheet and a bag of conversation hearts. In the past I have given each student their own box of hearts for them to sort, but that might be more appropriate for 2nd grade. This year I am going to put a BIG handful of hearts under the doc cam and we are going to do the worksheet together with the hearts on the board. After we graph them we will this math sheet. They will all have their own paper and be at the carpet with me and I will have students come up in pairs to solve the problem. Everyone on the carpet has to have it solved before they share their answer.

Reading

Boys and girls will love this read a loud!! Here is the video of Grumpy Monkey Valentine Gross Out.

Writing

They will be writing and designing their own candy heart! You can use any writing paper with a picture on top or grab this FREE one. If they had a candy heart what would theirs say? They will write why they chose it and then design and color their own heart on top.

conversation heart activity to design their own heart.

Stations

You will need enough conversation hearts for each student. I like to give each student 3 or 4 for their picture. This worksheet has them take a candy heart and turn it into something else. This is a great station to see how creative they can be! I try to avoid giving them any examples, otherwise, most will just copy it.

Science

This is a quick and fun activity to start off your Valentine’s Day Fun!

PARTY

Kids just want to have fun…. And talk to their friends! Think about how you want your party to go. It is hard to rely on parents to have classroom management skills so try to give them a calmer stations like bingo, food, or a craft. Leave the games to the teacher that can handle some of the behaviors.

I like to do my party in stations.

  1. Decorate your bags- I give each students a white giftbag with a handle. They will have stickers and markers to decorate it however they want. I will have a heart printed out with their name on it that they will glue on in the middle when they are finished. This will be opened and put on their desk when the station is over.
  2. Friendship mix and cupids punch! Valentine’s Day has A LOT of sugar so this is a better snack than a frosted cookie. They will use cups to make their own bag of friendship mix. For the cupids punch you will need: cups, licorice, vanilla ice cream, and cherry 7 up. When they are done they can play ispy while they snack.
  3. Games! I like to play 2 games for this station. Pin the kiss on the frog and concentration. I put a picture of a frog on the board and each kid gets a kiss with their name on it. The will be blindfolded and see who can get the closest. The next game is concentration. Make sure you copy this on cardstock or glue it to a darker paper so they can’t see it. My students this year LOVE this game. At this station they can also color or read Valentine’s books from the shelf.
  4. Bingo– What party is complete without Bingo! Students use conversation hearts as bingo markers!

With plenty of ideas and resources you can plan for a fun filled, low stress Valentine’s Day! As always, adapt any idea for your class and your teaching style. You do you Boo.
