Does your school do a student-led showcase in the spring? Want to rock it? In this POST you can find out how to plan, teach, and get ready for it. Our grade level decided to do a space-themed showcase because our unit of the moon, sun, and stars falls around the same time. Here are some of the projects that we did.

Phases Of The Moon

For some reason, my students LOVED learning about the moon! I ran with it and a lot of our projects are moon centered. HERE is a fun video about the phases of the moon.

Oreo Activity

I had my students do this in partners, you will need:

  • FREE worksheet
  • 4 Oreos per group or student
  • plastic knives or popsicle sticks.

I used the doc cam, and we did it whole class. The cream they scraped off we used on the phases that needed more. They had a great time with it. I took a picture of the partners with their moon phases and they ate it. Putting the pictures in their folder for Showcase Night!

Moon Phase Wheel

After learning about the moon phases we made this wheel as an assessment tool to see if they could explain the different phases of the moon. They shared it with their partner as a practice to tell their parents on showcase night.

Materials:

Phonics Moon

It just happens to be our phonics study of OO.  On a black or dark blue piece of paper glue a circle of foil. TIP: put 1 piece of foil per student in a stack and trace something with a circular base. I cut them out at one time and it was perfect!! The students glued their circle (MOON) in the middle of their paper. Giving each student and handful of Cheerios they had to make oo words. I gave them a sharpie to write the other letters and they glued it down with liquid glue. After, they used a white crayon to make stars and then used a silver sharpie to write their name. Here is the finished project.

Fun Space-Themed Activities

THIS PACK has amazing things!

sun moon and stars activitiesI used the roll a constellation fact family, planet report, catch a star writing and the OO moon words from it and soo much more! We did the catch a star paper and used removebackground.com to remove the background and then I put it on a black background so I wouldn’t have to cut much. After, I got these FOIL STARS from Amazon to use for most of the projects.

We used EPIC to learn about our planets and I used the facts they learned to make posters around the room. Then they used the posters to write their planet reports. I showed them how to mix colors using watercolor paints and use a picture to paint their planets. THESE turned out amazing!! I got the writing paper and planets from the THIS PACK.

astronaut crafts

  1. Take a picture of them looking to the side.
  2. Next remove the background.
  3. Put it on a PowerPoint black slide print and laminate it.
  4. We made an astronaut helmet and cut the middle out.
  5. Glue it on top of the picture of them and cut the excess off.
  6. Finally glue it on a black 12X18 black, folded piece of construction paper.

I put there picture on it using remove background, but you can just keep it as is. Punch a hole in the top and add string or yarn and tie. They put this on before they showed their family around.

CHECKLIST

Who doesn’t love a checklist right? Honestly this will make your life easier on the night. Everything they need to do is on this list so their parents can read it then they know what to do and not forget anything. When we practice for it they black out with a Sharpie if they don’t have the project.

I DO NOT MAKE UP PROJECTS. I use to… it would almost kill me. There are so many amazing things, that they do not have to have everything. They just black it out and say that they weren’t here that day. GAME CHANGER! I also do an estimation jar.

At the end of the checklist they write down their guess and the next day we count it and the winner takes home the candy in the jar. Since it is space theme, I used STARbursts!

FOLDER

Also, in their folder is an adventure the had on another planet story, their small group book to read to their parents, a math game to play (IN THAT SCIENCE PACK) and any projects that didn’t fit on the wall.

Then, I put their memory book on their desk. They have a writing they did each month about something we did and a directed drawing. I am not done with them, so they couldn’t take them home. If you are interested in the easiest and BEST memory books ever, check out my POST on how to get it ready for next year.

I used a paper that said, I love you to the moon and back, so their parents could write them a note.

space activities

I put this in the back of their memory book as a keepsake. If no one comes, I send it home for them to do and if it doesn’t come back I will write them a note. Here is a FREE parent note printable.

Extras

Who doesn’t like snacks right? I bought Moon pies, Cosmic Brownies, Starbursts, and water as a gesture welcoming families in. You do not have to do this, but I think it was a nice touch. I got my table cloths in a pack of 2 that I will reuse each year. Here is a FREE sign in sheet.

It was an amazing night and the kids and families loved coming to see a fun theme filled night! It is so special and impressive to have students show off their work.
